Phillip Capper accepts post as Honorary President

I am very pleased to confirm the appointment of Professor Phillip Capper as the Adjudication Society’s Honorary President. He has just accepted the appointment, which will last a period of three years. The Committee is extremely pleased that he has become our Honorary President, and our association with Professor Capper will strengthen our links not just with industry, but also academia.

Professor Capper is one of the most highly regarded lawyers in the field of engineering, construction and international arbitration. He is the Nash Professor at Kings College, London, where he leads the MSc in Construction Law and Dispute Resolution. He has been recognised by many legal authorities as a “leading individual” for many years and, in 2008, was one of the very few worldwide individuals listed in the Most Highly Regarded Individuals – Global in the International Who’s Who of Business Lawyers in Construction.

Phillip acted for TML, the Channel Tunnel Contract Consortium in respect of disputes referred to the projects dispute panel and also ICC Arbitration. He has been involved in all areas of construction and engineering including rail and infrastructure projects in many parts of the world.

Formerly chairman of the faculty of law at Oxford University, he teaches not only at King’s College London, but also directs the annual International Diploma Course for the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators in Oxford.

He commented on and lectured on the Latham Report and the proposals for adjudication before adjudication was introduced, and then has closely followed its development since the introduction of the Housing Grants, Construction and Regeneration Act 1996. He was instrumental in introducing the post-graduate Certificate in Construction Adjudication at King’s College.

Phillip will be providing the key note address at this year’s annual adjudication society conference in London on 12 November 2009.
